About the Poem
One of those poems which baffles the poet himself. I think I must be making fun of myself? Should I be angry about that?
The Moderate |
by Ted Reynolds |
I am a moderate. I wouldn't want to live forever, But I wouldn't mind seeing my third century. I'm a moderate. I don't think slime molds and viruses should get the vote, But I wouldn't deny it to dogs and porpoises. I'm a moderate. I don't think the government should be overthrown on mere whim, Unless it goes so far as to lie to us. I'm a moderate. I think all sorts of crackpot ideas should be allowed free expression, Though I draw the line at organized religion. I'm a moderate. I don't insist that you worship no other gods, As long as I get my own sacrifices regularly. |
