About the Poem

This is a poem I wrote about my best friend who had just come back from a year of globetrotting. I missed him so much at first but during the course of the year I got over it. Or maybe not?

In a sense, I guess this poem is also about personal growth and maturity.

Getting To Know You (All Over Again)

My mind was rinsed clean
When I heard that you had returned
My senses felt sharper than
They had for months.

But I felt no lurch of the heart
You did not matter so much to me anymore
(Or so I thought)

Then we met.

You were the same.
But you were bewildered by me,
My flirting and aggression.
My attempt to cure myself of you.

Our circle of friends has changed
The easy camaraderie and conversation
Has evaporated.

What now, dear friend?
May we start again?
I'm sure it will be worth it.
