About the Poem

I am dating an absolutely brilliant man. In the few short months we've been together, he's shown me what it means to lose yourself in someone else. Unfortunately, he's leaving for college in a few months.

This poem voices my frustration about being left behind, about watching the days drift by, about being powerless to change the course of things. We haven't really discussed any long distance plans, and the fears and insecurities are starting to pile up. I appreciate the publishing of this poem immensely. I feel I have no other forum to express the loneliness.

No Words

What can I say?
The time draws nearer.
I hear the clock ticking and chiming away.
It hits my cheek like a humid breeze
It's a full body tackle
That buckles my knees.

What can I say?
The days fall shorter.
I see the sun rising and burning away.
It bites me like an invisible flea
It's a bone- numbing pang
That endlessly stings.

What can I say?
I'm the only one talking
I feel my throat throbbing and weeping away.
It slaps like insanity in silence
It's a kind of loud quiet
That calm within violence.

What can I say?
You're leaving me.
